D 02   •  HABARANA – SIGIRIYA – POLONNARUWA – HABARANA                                                                                              

Early breakfast.

Departure to Sigiriya to visit the Lion Rock – On the steep slopes and at the top of a red stone rock 180m high, the “Lion Rock”, which dominates the jungle on all sides, remains the ruins of the citadel whose parricide king Kassyapa (477-495) made his capital. A series of galleries and stairs that open into the mouth of a colossal lion built of brick and plaster allow access to the site. A stone fortress surrounded by gardens, ponds. Sigiriya has been inhabited in the past, and used as a mountain monastery in the rock, in the 5th century BC. The Sigiriya site is considered one of the most important sites of the millennium. The Sigiriya Gardens are among the world’s oldest “Little Versailles” landscaped gardens. Sigiriya, UNESCO World Heritage Site. (Date 1982).

Departure for Polonnaruwa – This is the 2nd largest historic capital of the island. Its temples and palaces, whose remains stretch for several kilometers along the shore of a huge tank, are all the work of a single king, Parakrama Bahu, between 1153 and 1186. This city symbolizes the times the rebirth of the Sinhalese civilization and its last fires. After the invasion of the island by the Cholas of South India and the destruction of Anuradhapura, it was King Vijaya Bahu who drove out the Tamils ​​and set up his new capital at Polonnaruwa. But it is Parakrama Bahu who gave his hour of glory to the city, before it falls into oblivion and is engulfed by the jungle. The monumental remains of the fabulous garden city created in the 12th century by King Parakramabahu the Great are impressive. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa covers 22 hectares and has many well-preserved monuments, including the Gal Vihariya, which includes four colossal Buddhas carved into the rock face.

Stop on the way to Dambulla, – The Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a Buddhist site of Sri Lanka, located in Dambulla, This is built around a large granite boulder which encloses an important complex of caves, the Raja Maha Vihara , dating from the first century. It is the largest and best preserved cave complex in Sri Lanka. The site consists of some caves, 5 shrines, 4 main monasteries. It contains 157 statues, 153 images of the Buddha, 3 royal images and 4 images of deities. The mural paintings, covering 2100 m2, represent, among others, the temptation of Buddha by the demon Māra and her first sermon. There are also statues of Hindu deities Vishnu and Saman.

En route visit Nalanda Gedige.

Matalé – visit spice gardens offering all the native varieties of Sri Lanka, such as: peppers, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, peppers … Tasting spices teas and demonstration of the therapeutic virtues of each plant.

Then continue to Kandy – City, located in the heart of the central massif of Sri Lanka, 500m above sea level, Kandy is on a plain in the middle of imposing hills, this city is surrounded by the largest river in Sri Lanka: the Mahaweli . Pleasant, this city with a temperate climate, thanks to its picturesque location and its historical past, has made it a favorite place for travelers. Built around an artificial lake, it was the last capital of Ceylon before the island became a British colony. Kandy is famous for its Temple of the Tooth of the Buddha, indeed it was brought to the fourth century, according to legend. Kandy has kept its character as the island’s religious capital. It is also one of the most important places of world Buddhism.

D 04   •  KANDY- PINNAWELA – PERADENIYA – KANDY                                    

Breakfast at the hotel. Then drive to Pinnawela.

Visit of “Millennium Elephant Foundation” in Pinnawala.

Unforgettable moment, in this small park: small walk on elephant back then bath with him. The place is certainly not big, (small number of these mammals within the foundation) but it remains so on a human scale and everyone can enjoy a moment with an elephant. You can also feed elephants, fruit – small basket carefully, prepared by the staff of the foundation, a mini-museum is also to be discovered.

Return to Kandy.

Then visit the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya – Vast of 60 hectares, this ancient park of the kings of Kandy is reputed to be one of the most beautiful botanical gardens of the world. You will discover the Royal Palm Alley, the Bamboo Water Route, the Bats Route, the Spice Garden, the Orchid Pavilion, the Anthurium Greenhouse and the Begonias.

Visit of the city and the local market of Kandy and free time for shopping in the lanes bordered by numerous stalls offering: silk, local crafts, jewels, basketwork, masks, umbrella.

Visit the Royal Palace, the Temple of the Tooth or Dalada Maligawa “which contains the sacred relic of the Buddha Tooth.

Also attend a Kandyenne dance demonstration – masked dances, semi-religious rituals, but also pure Kandy dances with colorful costumes, they are still an integral part of the island’s culture. Kandyan dance is the official Sri Lankan dance and dates back to the time of the Kandyan kings. It comes in four versions and many gestures mimic the movements of animals. The dancer dressed in a wide skirt, is shirtless adorned with numerous silver and ivory necklaces as well as bracelets and silver rings at his feet. These dancers are accompanied by musicians and percussionists and perform pirouettes and jumps.

D 05   •  KANDY – NUWARA ELIYA

Departure to Nuwara Eliya Road – In the center of the island, through its lush mountain scenery and tea plantations. Perched at an altitude of 1900m, Nuwara Eliya, “the city above the clouds”, is Sri Lanka’s most sought-after climate resort. Its English gardens, colonial architecture and grand golf course give it a very British look, witness of the colonial past of the island.

En route visit Ramboda falls (waterfalls).

Visit of a plantation and a factory of the famous tea of Ceylon
